Dalgona Coffee: A Viral Trend with a Whipped History
Curious about where Dalgona Coffee originated?
Well, it’s a South Korean phenomenon that took the internet by storm. Named after a popular Korean honeycomb toffee, this drink features a velvety, cloud-like layer of whipped coffee atop a rich milk base. The trend skyrocketed to fame through social media.
The Rise of Dalgona Coffee on TikTok
TikTok played a significant role in propelling Dalgona coffee to worldwide acclaim. Its short-form video format enticed users across the globe to embrace the simplicity and visual appeal of creating the frothy concoction.
The process involves whipping together equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until a thick, creamy foam forms. This foam is then dolloped over a glass of milk or a milk alternative. The mesmerizing videos showcasing the transformation from a liquid to a cloud-like coffee topping sparked a global coffee revolution.
Gather up your ingredients
For the Whipped Layer:
– 2 tablespoons instant espresso or instant coffee (Café Bustelo is a great brand)
– 2 tablespoons sugar
– 2 tablespoons hot water
For the Base:
– 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
– 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
– 1/8 teaspoon almond extract
– Crushed candy canes (for garnish)
An Adult Twist
The Peppermint Dalgona Coffee features a layer of milk lifted by peppermint and almond flavors. But, if you want an even more festive (yet, adult!) twist, use half the milk and replace the extracts with our homemade peppermint cream liqueur.
